Castlebar Rotary Club was delighted to welcome Rotary District Governor Michael Fleming and his wife to Castlebar on Tuesday, 10 March 2026 for a club meeting and social evening.

Following the meeting, a group of Rotarians joined the District Governor for dinner in Al Muretto Italian Restaurant in Castlebar, owned by fellow Rotarian Marco Volpara. It was a very enjoyable evening, giving members a chance to continue conversations in a relaxed setting and to show the District Governor some of Castlebar’s warm hospitality.

The following day, Castlebar Rotary President John Mulroy and Assistant Governor Finan Joyce, also of Castlebar Rotary, accompanied Michael Fleming and his wife to Cong to view the early stages of construction of Daisy Lodge.

Daisy Lodge is a major and very special project being developed by Cancer Fund for Children. The new centre, on the shores of Lough Corrib, is being built as a therapeutic short break centre for children and young people diagnosed with cancer and for their families. It will be the charity’s second Daisy Lodge on the island of Ireland and is intended to provide families with time, space and specialist support during the most difficult of circumstances. The Mayo lodge is due to open in spring 2027, with construction now well underway.

The project represents a significant investment in support services for families affected by childhood cancer. Government backing announced for the project described the Cong facility as a 30,000 square foot short break centre, while Cancer Fund for Children says the new lodge will help extend these vital services to even more families across the island.

It was a valuable opportunity for the District Governor to see first-hand the progress being made on such an important development in the west of Ireland. With construction visibly advancing, the visit offered an encouraging glimpse of what will become a hugely important resource.

Castlebar Rotary Club was pleased to host the visit of DG Michael and his wife.
